Pentatonic scale

The pentatonic scale is the scale most common to the Native American Style wood flute. By learning these notes you will be well on your way to creating lots of great music.

The black circles indicate that your finger completely covers the hole. The white circles indicate that a hole is not covered.

Seven of the eight songs on my Simple Wonders CD were written with just these notes.

The extended notes chart contains additional notes that can be played on your 6 hole Native American style flute. These are common fingerings but may not work on all flutes.

I highly recommend the exercises by Helen Yetman-Bellows from Helen's Willow Wind Yogic Musicians Clinics(TM). Tension is very common among musicians who spend long hours playing their instruments. Helen's exercises are great for keeping my hands, neck and shoulders relaxed. This is the first video in a series. If you like these exercises be sure to check out Helen's Yoga Unfettered site.
